I should be drawing but..... I've been watching a lot of movies and podcasts on movies I've been trying to catch up on. Here are some of my favorite sites:

Spill.com
This site has some really funny animated movie reviews, and fairly casual/layman reviews on movies, comic books and games.

Slate.com
An offset of the Slate magazine, this site is a bit more formal (they use slightly bigger words and are more yuppie-ish) and the insight comes from both men and women reviewers.

Found an really talented illustrator off the dailywh.at site, Annie Wu. Freshly graduated from illustration school in 2010, she has a really funky and urban style, slightly remimiscent of Marguerite Sauvage, with a wicked sense of nerd humour. I've been going through her illos but my favourite is her reinterpretation of the JLA.

David Downton - new book

David Downton is one of my most favorite fashion illustrators. I was in Chapters yesterday and happened on his new book Masters of Illustration It was sooo gorgeous and gave a good beginning of the world of fashion illustration as well as one third of the book was devoted to his own art. My only complaint is that I wish more of his collection was there. For more information on him and the process there's a great interview here.

I just updated my website with another info graphic I did for a company a few while back. The topic was some of more outlandish deaths at Carnivals and wow I found they could either range from super tragic to super silly. There was the ride in China where six people died and eight were injured or a USA Ferris wheel where the ride stopped, the guy panicked and then tried to climb out, it was three stories high. Half the work was spent on online research, wow there was a bit to go through, and the rest was on the info graphic. The finished product took a total of five days, including research to complete.

I was browsing for some new music to listen to when I happened onto the Hatsune Miku concert in Japan. Hatsune is a singing, digital avatar created by Crypton Future Media that customers can purchase and then program to perform any song on a computer. I thinkg the concept is brillant, like attending a 3D movie, and if they ever use it for bands like Gorillaz I am sound. Now the singing on the other hand - is like listening to my old cell phone ring - tingy and a little annoying.

I just saw this comic off notcot a few days ago and instantly fell in love. Red face is a horror comic from artist Emily Carroll with slight tones of Edgar Allen Poe and an amazing art style and layout. Though Halloween is long past, it is definitely worth another read through.

Process work for The Truth about Unicorns Cover

It's Friday - yay - which means I get to show a little bit of my work-in-progress for the Truth About Unicorn cover.

I initially did three roughs based on an art brief from the art director.

After that and a bit of nit picking here and there, we decided on one particular rough and modified it a little bit.

Then came time for the final work:
a) I did some finished ink work from the final rough

b) Added some watercolour and texture for the hair.

c) Played around with the composition of the trees.

d) Then after some back and forth - voila - instant art.... yes I am summarizing here.

Book cover - The Truth about Unicorns

I've been going through some older jobs from the summer and I have a lot of things I'd like to show!
For a project I really enjoyed, I finished a book cover for a story, The Truth about Unicorns, which is about a family and the occult happenings which deeply, darkly effect them for Wing Ko.
The premise of the cover is a mysterious force, one of the more stranger female characters, shrouds the forest in which the story takes place in.
The medium I used was a mix of ink, watercolor and digital. The style suggested is a simple, flat and Muchas-esh feel.

Just practicing my screen printing skills for the Canzine Festival on October 24th. I'm a huge fan of the Scott Pilgrim series from Bryan Lee O'Malley and just finished the last book. For both Fan Expo and Canzine I've designed and screen printed some of my favourite characters, Scott, Ramona, Kim, Stacey, Young Neil, Knives, Stephen, Wallace, Envy, Gideon and Julie.

With long weekend coming around I'd like to reflect a bit on the past year. Since this reflecting business is going to take awhile I'd rather show the work that my good friend Gab did for the Claireview Subway station back in Edmonton. He and the Edmonton Art Gallery have been working awhile on this huge metal piece and it just looks awesome. Detail of the piece is under the the photo! Oh yes and he loves animals!

old artwork turned new!

I just found a watercolour piece I was working on during the summer that I submitted for the Hong Kong Comic Convention (whether it made it there or not, I'm still not too sure).
It's still incomplete but I haven't found the time to add the final touches yet. It's been a while since I've done both some watercolouring and digital colouring together so I hope to pick it up again soon.

The setting is reminiscent of a group of friends/characters I've created, hanging out in a nice place at night while soaking in the ambiance of the outside night life. It's a lot like my place, except with room, furniture, money and not the view of a concrete wall.

I am a HUGE fan of the Street Fighter series and with the outing of Super Street Fighter IV, I just had to do a few pieces of my favourite fighter Chun Li and another one of all her Street Fighter IV gal pals, Sakura, Juri, Cammy, Makoto, Rose, Crimson Viper, and Ibuki. The Chun Li was screened on t-shirts and the full cast was screen printed as a poster. (Oh the 14 year old in me is sooo happy!)

Fan Expo Clean and update one

I was one of many participants at this year FanExpo but haven't a chance to post any of my new images. I'm a big fan of Vertigo's/Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, especially one of the Endless characters, Death. The series was introduced to me from my friend Kim. This particular print I did was on a t-shirt that ended up selling out at the con. I used ink and a little bit of digital touch up.

Just found out about this extremely funny animation from Spain. Freaklances is a hilarious animation short series from Julio Garma and Alex Otero, about the life of a freelancer, Fausto, and his other friends and client who are in the industry. Very cute, very funny and sometimes hits a little too close to home. I am especially a huge fan of the beginning of this episode since I done the exact thing that Fausto has done every morning.

Update to Yien Yip Illustration War Series

It has been a very busy. I've had time to finish another series, "War Time Romance". I was inspired by the work I did for "History's Greatest Tank Battles", and did two pieces inspired by the battles.
Piece one is based on lost love letters sent between a World War II soldier and his fiance. Piece two is based on a lost journal of a dead WW II soldier and his account of the war addressed to his girlfriend that was never sent.
The pieces were done in a more monochromatic tone in watercolor, ink and digital.

New update to my illustration site. I've just finished one of my new series "The Family Seasons Series". It's based on my friends and family and on the different stages of life we go through. Spring is school graduation. Summer is coping with starting a family when you have a long distance relationship with your significant other. Fall is the start of the family and all the problems in between. Winter is the silver years of your life.

All pieces are done in watercolour, ink and digital.

Short Story work for Rubicon

Late in some posting, these are some pieces done for a Mayan short story, "Why Butterflies don't sing" for Rubicon. The story is about how the cardinal gods gave the songs of the butterflies to the children on earth.
It was a fun experience and they let me go crazy with colours! Awesome!

Playing with my Outsider Illustration

When I was working on my Outsider piece for my mailer, I had a few other interpretations for the front piece. These ones were not my favourites since the character is hiding more than standing out but I liked the results enough that I wanted to post them to show. Thanks and enjoy!

It is mailer time again! So I've been busy doing images for both my e-mail and postcard images. This time I've decided on a two sided mailer and used the theme "outsider" on both images. I've always wanted to do detailed images with contrasting silhouettes in each piece. Both pieces started with an ink underline and some experimenting with watercolour.

It's a bit of an experimental week! I had an old sketch lying around - memories - which is my interpretation of what happens to a person when they look at old photographs and other nostalgic items. So I re-inked it and re-tooled it with some watercolour textures and voila a new piece with a bit of a softer feeling that I really like!

I was observing some of my friends their significant others and was wondering, wow, when you're tangled up in all that technology, may it be a blackberry, an ipod, nintendo DS etc, do you even have time for a chat with each other? This is my playful interpretation and possibly my own future in it!

Just updated a new piece for my site. As an homage to one of my favorite chinese shows, You're hired, I did a watercolor piece of the two main protagonists, Song and Ching. The gist of the show is an uber successful but guilt ridden business man, Song, who regrets a few of his career choices meets a broke, shopaholic loan shark, Ching. She tries to learn from his business savvy and he tries to make up for his money grubbing past and they both ultimately fail.
